Let’s be brutally honest about the state of technology in Latin America. We have a history of showing up late to the governance party.
If you look at the stats, the picture is grim. The number of ISO 27001 certified organizations in the region is still low compared to global leaders. We know that proper cybersecurity governance hasn't fully kicked in yet.
So, when we ask, "Is LATAM ready for AI?" the formal, textbook answer is no.
But here is the uniquely Latin American paradox: We aren't "ready," but we are already at the center of the action.
Depending on which report you read, somewhere between 60% and 70% of workers in the region are already using generative AI tools. They aren't waiting for permission from IT or Legal. They are actively creating what we call "Shadow AI", unofficial tools processing company data under the radar.
The debate isn't about whether we should start working on AI solutions. That ship has sailed. The real debate now is how fast we can put guardrails on a speeding train.

The Chicken or the Egg: Security vs. AI Governance

A common question I get is: "Do we need to fix our information security governance before we tackle AI?"
Technically, yes. You cannot build "Trustworthy AI" if the data feeding it is leaking out the back door.
Think of Information Security (like ISO 27001 standards) as the floor. It ensures your data has integrity and confidentiality. AI Governance (like the new ISO 42001) is the ceiling. It deals with bias, ethics, and ensuring the AI doesn't "hallucinate" and lie to your customers.
If you try to build the ceiling before you have a floor, the whole structure collapses. If you don't have basic data classification policies, your shiny new internal chatbot will eventually tell an employee how much their boss earns.

We Can't Wait for Perfection

However, if you wait until you have a mature, fully compliant cybersecurity apparatus before you touch AI, you will be left behind. Your competitors—both local and global—are moving fast. Brazil and Colombia are already seeing a massive pivot toward compliance because new laws are forcing their hand.
We don't need to aim for Swiss-watch perfection overnight. LATAM’s strength has always been adaptive resilience—our ability to build the plane while flying it.

Small Wins to Get the Ball Rolling

Forget about a massive, multi-year governance overhaul for a moment. If you want to move from "Wild West" chaos to a semblance of control, start with these low-friction wins this week:
  1. The "Shadow AI" Audit: Stop guessing. Send a simple, anonymous survey to your teams: "Which AI tools are you using right now to do your job?" The results will terrify you, but it’s the only way to see your actual risk surface.
  1. The Human-in-the-Loop Rule: Declare an immediate mandate: No AI-generated output goes directly to a client without a human "sanity check." This is your temporary insurance policy against AI hallucinations while you build better controls.
  1. The "Low-Stakes" Pilot: Don't start by applying AI to your core credit lending algorithms. Start with internal document summarization or coding assistance. Let your team "break things" in a sandbox where a mistake won't make the evening news.

The First Step: A "Minimum Viable" Policy

Information security isn't a hurdle designed to slow you down; it’s the brakes that allow you to drive fast safely.
You don’t need a 50-page manual to start governing. You need to draw a red line immediately. You need an Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) that dictates exactly what can—and absolutely cannot—be put into public AI models like ChatGPT.
